Chapter Thirteen

In Abby’s office, the rain still pattering against the windows, I continued my search for Kimberly Hawthorne. Elvis, lounging on the desk, watched the screen with a curious tilt of his head, while Prissy dozed off in a cozy corner.

Suddenly, I stumbled upon a breaking news article from Starkville, Mississippi. The headline sent a jolt through me: “Local Professor and Wife Found Dead in Apparent Home Invasion.” The accompanying photo showed a couple, unmistakably Kimberly and Professor Hawthorne.

My heart sank. “Guys, you need to see this,” I called out, my voice barely above a whisper.

Dad, Abby, and Bailey crowded around the laptop, their expressions turning to shock as they read the article. “That’s… Kimberly and her husband,” Dad stammered, disbelief etching his face.

The article reported the breaking news story of the couple's tragic discovery in their home that morning. The police believed that a burglary gone wrong resulted in their deaths. There was no mention of any suspects or arrests.

“This doesn’t make sense,” I said, my mind racing. “Hawthorne was just here. And if Kimberly’s dead, then who’s behind all this? Who’s writing the poems and why are they targeting our family?”

Elvis, breaking the heavy silence, said, “Maybe the person we’re looking for is someone who knew about the family curse, someone close to Kimberly.”

“Even I didn’t know the family secret!” I complained.

“You know, your mother always feared the Calloway curse,” he said softly. “She loved deeply, but the price was always lurking in her mind.”

I nodded, feeling a lump in my throat. “And Kimberly?” I asked tentatively. Dad sighed, his eyes clouded with worry. “Your mother tried to warn her, but she never believed in the curse, always called it a silly superstition. But according to the letter to your grandmother, at some point she started to believe. I wonder what made her take it seriously.” His voice trailed off, leaving an unspoken fear hanging in the air.

Abby nodded. “We need to dig deeper into their lives, find out who they associated with, who might have known about the family curse.”

Prissy, awakened by our voices, trotted over and placed her head on my knee, her big brown eyes looking up at me as if trying to offer comfort.

“We should also find out more about their deaths,” Dad suggested. “There might be a connection to Mr. Harlan and Vivian’s murders.”

I nodded, feeling a mix of grief and determination. “I’ll start looking into their connections in Starkville, see if anything stands out.” Pausing briefly, I contemplated my next move and the actions I desperately wished to avoid. They were both the same action. Dare I call the ex-husbutt and see what he could find out from the Starkville police? With a heavy sigh, I reached for my phone. I needed information, more than I needed to not give Tom the satisfaction of feeling like I needed him. In this case, I did need him.

I placed the call and explained the situation. Not all of it, of course, just that I
